RescueDigest’s Top Picks of essential resources for critical topics in emergency services.

Motivating Millennials, The Next Generation of Emergency Services

“These Kids Today!” is the plaintive cry of adults so old that it’s probably scrawled on cave walls complaining how the younger members of the tribe just don’t hunt mammoth like we used to. So why does it seem like it is such a big deal now that we’re talking about Gen Y, Millennials or the ME generation? Well, RescueDigest has looked into it and come up with the definitive solution that will end the problem forever. Sadly, you should see the office. That paper was right around here somewhere. Listen, while we look for it, how about we give you some resources that will help give you insight into the motivation and management of the next generation of emergency services.

Difficult Student
Wait, didn't you APPLY to work here?!?

How you can use these resources: RescueDigest curates great research and resources during the development of our articles and educational programs. Since our mission is to “Help You Help Others” we present the best of these resources for you to explore, share and use in your own agency.

Never before has a generation entered the work force that has shared personality traits so antithetical to the traditional values and culture of existing fire, EMS and law enforcement services. But is this necessarily a bad thing? Millennials share many traits that are desperately needed to help emergency services adapt to a changing world that, frankly, belongs to the very people that we’re complaining about. The trick to it is to smooth the transition of Millennials into the workforce and the transfer of organizational knowledge and mentorship from the Baby Boomers and Gen X’ers already in the place. So how the heck can you do THAT? Well, it’s different for every organization, but here are some great resources to give you the tools that you need to get started. Remember, knowing is half the battle (just not the tough half, unfortunately).
